Sons of Anarchy: What Made Chibs Leave the IRA?

3 Mins read

Chibs from Sons of Anarchy has a tangled past that includes being expelled from the IRA, but why was he expelled?

Filip “Chibs” Telford, the current president of SAMCRO, is one of the most recognizable characters from Sons of Anarchy. However, like most of the club’s members, he has a troubled background that involves the IRA, from which he was excommunicated years before the events of the series, and here’s why. Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy, which followed the title gang and its internal and external challenges, transported viewers to the made-up town of Charming, California to explore the world of motorcycle clubs. Sons of Anarchy earned excellent reviews right away, which allowed it to continue for a total of seven seasons before ending in 2014.

Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), the club’s vice president at the start of the series and the son of John “JT” Teller, one of the club’s original members, serves as the group’s leader. The show begins when Jax discovers his father’s manifesto for the club, in which JT presented his thoughts and viewpoints that were extremely unlike from those of Clay Morrow, the organization’s current president and Jax’s stepfather (Ron Perlman).

Jackson “Jax” Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam, is the leader of Sons of Anarchy. His father, John “JT” Teller, was a founding member of the club and served as the organization’s vice president at the start of the series. The first episode of the series begins when Jax discovers his father’s manifesto, in which JT expressed his thoughts and beliefs for the club, which were extremely unlike from those of the president of the organization at the time (and Jax’s stepfather), Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman).

The road to that wasn’t easy, as Chibs’ complicated past includes being excommunicated from the IRA and a years-long rivalry with Jimmy O’Phelan (Titus Welliver), the IRA’s leader. But why was he excommunicated? Chibs holds an incredible SAMCRO record as he went from full patched member to Sgt-at-arms, VP, and finally President of the club, a role that he still

What happened between Chibs and Jimmy O’Phelan on Sons of Anarchy?

Chibs’ adversary Jimmy O’Phelan was a street lord who represented the True IRA. O’Phelan was a villain in Sons of Anarchy seasons 2 and 3, and despite the fact that he provided weaponry to SAMCRO, his animosity for Chibs remained constant. Chibs was born in Scotland and raised in Belfast, where he briefly worked as a physician in the British Army. Little is known about Chibs’ life before the events of Sons of Anarchy. He eventually joined the True IRA, was married to Fiona Larkin, and had a daughter named Kerriane with her.

But out of jealously, O’Phelan expelled Chibs from the IRA, left him with facial scars (thus his moniker, “chibs,” which in Scots slang means “street blade”), forbade him from going back to Ireland, and took Fiona along with him, raising Kerriane as his own daughter. It is uncertain why O’Phelan was so envious of Chibs, although Fiona may have played a role in their rivalry as well as many of Chibs’ personal troubles.

It’s also conceivable that O’Phelan expelled Chibs because he valued him higher in the IRA and then married his wife and adopted his daughter as “revenge” against him. Chibs was the link between the two charters after being excommunicated and becoming SAMBEL’s (the Sons of Anarchy’s Belfast charter) first prospect.

Despite the fact that he was no longer a member of the IRA and didn’t go back to Ireland until Sons of Anarchy season 3, Chibs functioned as the club’s liaison with them. In the same season, Chibs finally got his comeuppance on Jimmy O’Phelan when, with Unser’s assistance, he marked O’Phelan with a “Glasgow smile” before murdering him, while Opie (Ryan Hurst) murdered Agent June Stahl. The reasons behind O’Phelan’s envy will remain a mystery even if Chibs made an appearance in Mayans M.C. It is doubtful that this aspect of his narrative will be examined because he isn’t a character in this series.
