Max fell into a coma in the Stranger Things 4 finale after fighting Vecna. Sadie Sink won’t be absent from the show for very long, though.
Sadie Sink’s character Max Mayfield may have fallen into a coma in the Stranger Things season 4 finale, but she won’t likely remain there for the duration of the fifth and final season. However, given that she did briefly pass away during her battle with Vecna, things now seem bleak for her (Jamie Campbell Bower). While Max is still alive, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) may have been able to revive her, but Vecna may have had something to do with her inability to regain consciousness.
Max was without a doubt the season’s top performer with her compelling plot of grieving over her brother Billy and falling victim to Vecna. The entire audience appreciated Sink’s performance, especially for the “Running Up That Hill” scene in “Chapter Four: Dear Billy” when Max was able to escape Vecna’s grasp after hearing the well-known Kate Bush song. Sink’s fame is growing outside of Stranger Things since she co-stars in the much awaited film The Whale with Brendan Fraser. With that in mind, it’s doubtful that the Stranger Things production crew will want to keep Sink off-screen for the season’s finale.
Stranger Things 5’s Time Jump Means Max’s Return Won’t Feel Cheap

The Duffer brothers, who created the show, have indicated that a time leap will occur in Stranger Things season 5. This is primarily due to logistical concerns, as several of the young characters on the show grew considerably between seasons 3 and 4, which, from a plot perspective, should only have been a few months. The COVID-19 pandemic caused production on Stranger Things season 4 to be delayed, but Max’s storyline might benefit from this.
When a prominent character’s life is in danger at the end of a season finale of a program, viewers may feel deceived if that character is saved at the start of the next season. However, a sizable time leap may result in Max awakening in a number of ways that feel natural to the plot. Stranger Things is able to communicate how traumatic Max’s coma was without making it seem trite by portraying the characters’ reactions to her coming up.
How Max Can Wake Up In Stranger Things Season 5

While it is always possible for Max to simply awaken from her coma, it doesn’t seem likely given that she wasn’t brought there by any natural processes. All evidence suggests that Max is still alive inside Vecna, keeping her from returning to reality. However, as he did with Nancy, Vecna employs his victims in unusual ways. He possessed Natalia Dyer (Nancy), preyed on her traumas, and then sent her back with a message about his intentions. Vecna may invade Max in the same way he invaded Hawkins, which he has already started to do.
Max was also saved by Eleven, even though Vecna may be trying to kill her or at the very least use her for his own evil purposes. The extent of Eleven’s abilities have not yet been revealed because her ability to resurrect people is new and the revival scene occurred toward the end of the season 4 finale. Since all that is known is that Eleven used her memories to save Max, it is entirely possible that she spent the entire time jump attempting to bring her best friend back before being successful. It’s possible that Max opens her eyes at the end of Stranger Things season 5’s opening episode.
